Our Self-Defense Workshops are a basic introduction to hand-to-hand defenses and non-lethal weapons. Learn how to protect yourself and escape dangerous situations. This empowering class focuses on escape and self-protection techniques. This is the opportunity you have been looking for. For the comfort of our attendees, this is a Trans and Non-Binary only class, and we always have a crisis advocate on site should anything be triggering. Is there a minimum age requirement for the class? Yes. We HIGHLY suggest your child be at least 15 years old since the topics we discuss are mature and can include mentions of rape, date rape, domestic abuse, and more. There is always a crisis counselor on-site for support and assistance with resources. What should I bring to the class? Dress comfortably; you will be moving around. Tennis shoes or a sneaker is best. Storage area is limited, so please plan to travel light. During Black Trans History Month, we celebrate trailblazers within the Black Transgender & Non-binary communities worldwide as part of this annual celebration of black voices and contributions to black culture! These influential individuals have helped pave the way for the advancement of the overall community. We honor and salute their excellence and contribution to our story. OUR Black Trans History. Today we celebrate & honor Queen Unique Ziar @1upor for her work in developing housing for trans people of color as well as various programs within the Los Angeles county housing structures; thank you for sharing your gifts with the world. Queen Unique Ziar began her work in 1997 with the Minority AIDS Project as a Peer Health Education consultant. She then trained with OAPP as an HIV testing counselor and Case Manager which gave her insight into navigating community assistance. After taking a break from working in advocacy for a few years, Unique began getting deeper connected with the trans community around her, as she did her own individual outreach in which she discovered all the gaps in housing services as experienced by her siblings in the Huntington Park community. Through this work is how Unique Turning Point was formed and Unique Ziar then committed to 9 years of service through this organization. In 2022, Unique reestablished her non-profit organization Unique Point of Refuge. Currently, Unique Point of Refuge has been engaging in fundraising efforts and has most recently taken up residency in the Connie Norman Transgender Center. UPOR (Up Or Nothing because failure is not an option) is currently preparing for its first official community fundraiser - in the form of a fashion show, planned for April 9th, 2023. Queen Shannon Gipson is a 41-year-old proud Black Trans woman and community leader, born in Inglewood, CA. She obtained her B.A in Fashion Design & Merchandising in 2002. In 2020, she started volunteering for Unique Woman’s Coalition to move out of depression & from feeling unproductive. Volunteering ignited a light, a passion in Queen Shannon. The organization developed an internship program in which she was offered this internship, and soon after, she became the first employee of the first Trans-led organization in Southern California. It being Black Trans-led was the cherry on top. In her time working with UWC, she's developed leadership skills and a desire to do her part to elevate Black Trans Culture locally and at large. She's learning to organize and implement programming. She's found her voice and ways that she can make a positive impact. She's now the Office Manager for Unique Woman's Coalition. Jaden Fields Jaden is a survivor organizer, poet, educator, and cannabis enthusiast cultivating healing-centered spaces committed to collective liberation. Jaden is the Co-Director of Mirror Memoirs, an oral history and national organizing project intervening in rape culture by uplifting the healing and liberation of queer, trans/non-binary, intersex, Black, Indigenous, and people of color (QTIBIPOC) who are survivors of child sexual abuse. His work within grassroots and nonprofit organizations has included designing and leading programs for trans folks to access health services, training government agencies to better serve transgender people, participatory action research, and policy advocacy at the city, county, and state level. As a consultant, Jaden supports organizations, collectives, and professional groups to increase their knowledge and capacity to support and uplift communities that continue to be marginalized by white supremacy. Jaden self-published his first poetry chapbook, Intentional Musings on Staying Alive When I Want To Die (2019), an honest depiction of navigating mental health and systemic oppression. Last year UWC created our team launched a T-Shirt Design class, participants were able to learn how to create their own T-shirt designs and print them direct to garments. #@amysmithart Today I finished and delivered my painting “Everyone” for Ontario History and Art Museum for the exhibit themed “We the People: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” that explores the complexity of the US Constitution. I am so grateful for my model @chanelblaclumiere to allow me to photograph her for this piece. When I heard the theme I thought of the Many left out of the Constitution and wanted to highlight that. Included in this collage are activists that made a path for us and youth activists that have been doing the work now. Chanel felt it important to encompass the youth and their contributions. Of course I agree. I hope this speaks loudly for all marginalized people, especially the trans community. The tomorrow I imagine includes us all working together for a brighter human experience. . Big shout out always to @vakseen a true champion of me and my work. “We have blessed by the State of California to train 108 Black Transitional Aged Youth, 18-26, on what it means to be a mental health ambassador to their families, communities, and friend circles – and we want to talk to you about the best way to do it.” -Positive Results Center We are looking for Black residents of Los Angeles County, between the ages of 16 and 70, to join us for a series of intimate conversations about: - how mental health and trauma impact our lives, families, and community - what strategies and discussions we need to have to create healing and transformation - and how you think we can most effectively teach and support Black youth to become healers and change makers. Each session (virtual and in-person) will be 90 minutes. Participants who attend the Listening Session will receive a $25 gift certificate. We can ONLY send you a gift certificate if you are a Los Angeles resident.
